The veteran Christian dissident has been arrested for the third time since 2014. He has faced continuous police harassment for eleven years.
Pastor Huang Yizi, of the Fengwo Church—a house church in Pingyang County, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province—has become a notable figure for those following the struggle of Christians against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its anti-religious policies.
In 2014, Huang protested against the CCP’s extensive campaign to remove crosses in Zhejiang Province, where approximately 1,700 crosses were dismantled from churches. As a result of his activism, Huang was arrested and spent one year in prison.
In 2016, he was arrested again on vague charges of communicating with foreigners and endangering national security. He then spent five months in a so-called “black jail,” a secret facility that typically denies prisoner visits and is known for the use of torture.
As “Bitter Winter” reported, in 2018 Huang was one of the signatories of a declaration opposing the new Chinese Regulation on Religious Affairs. Since then, he has been under constant surveillance.
On June 26, 2025, Huang was taken away by the Pingyang Public Security Bureau and the Lucheng National Security Bureau. During this incident, he was informed that he was suspected of “illegal business operations,” a common accusation used against religious dissidents. When Huang’s wife attempted to film the arrest, she was assaulted by the police.
Additionally, four co-workers from the church were also arrested at the same time. Huang is currently being detained at the Pingyang County Detention Center.
