Liu Qi, male, 32 years old, a Christian from The Church of Almighty God, had his asylum application denied in Spain. On November 20, 2023, he was arrested by the CCP police after being forcibly sent back to China. Liu Qi, who fled overseas 8 years ago, ends up being caught by the CCP police.
“You’ll Die If You Move Forward. But You Have to Do So.”
Due to the brutal persecution by the CCP government, some Christians from CAG (The Church of Almighty God) had to leave home to seek asylum in South Korea, Japan, Spain, and other countries. Unfortunately, many of their applications were not approved. In October 2023, some of them submitted their asylum applications in Spain but later they were subjected to forcible deportation. Among them, some were even sent back to China. Before being deported, one of them even prepared her last will, because they knew what awaited them ahead was torture, long-term imprisonment and even the end of their lives. “During those days, I felt like I waited for death every day. That feeling was hard to describe – knowing that you would die if you moved forward, but you had to do so,” another CAG member who was waiting for deportation with Liu Qi remembers, “Liu Qi often walked back and forth in the hall. He could not eat all day and could not sleep all night.” This CAG member fled to another country after bidding a farewell to Liu Qi.
Reportedly, in May this year, Liu Qi’s mother was arrested by the police due to her belief in God, which was like adding insults to injuries for Liu Qi.
According to incomplete statistics, in 2022 alone, at least 14 CAG Christians were persecuted to death, and 1,002 were sentenced to three years or more in prison, with the longest prison term being 15 years. As for those Christians who have attended gatherings overseas and appeared in the films and videos produced by the church, they have been singled out for the CCP’s special hunts and arrests.
Li Yanli, another CAG Christian who took the same flight as Liu Qi during the process of their deportation, cut her wrists to declare her attitude right before the plane took off.
“I cannot go back to China. I will definitely be tortured to death there,” She said, “I have no way out.” This 30-year-old Christian has performed in more than 80 CAG films and videos. She even prepared her last will before being deported.
Christians Deported to China Subjected to Forced Disappearance, Torture and Severe Penalty in Jail
In recent years, some CAG Christians had to return to China for various reasons. Their cases are really disturbing.
In February 2022, Christian Zhang Xinhua who had performed in some CAG films and videos returned to China from South Korea. He was arrested in September 2022 and his whereabouts have remained unknown ever since.
In 2021, Zhang Ying (pseudonym) who was in her late 50s was arrested. She returned to China from the United States in 2017 and had been on the run for 4 years to avoid the CCP’s hunt. At that time, she suffered from a malignant tumor and was in urgent need of surgery. She was extremely weak, but the police still tortured her and interrogated her. They forced her to sit on a tiger bench and put handcuffs and shackles on her. They did not stop until she had convulsions and could not move. Zhang Ying was sentenced to one and a half years in prison, despite her serious condition.
In 2019, Li Zheng (pseudonym) returned to China from Saipan but he did not dare to go home. One month after hiding himself in the house of one of his relatives, he failed to escape the CCP’s arrest. Li Zheng was detained at a brainwashing center for 35 days before being sentenced to 7 years in jail.
In 2018, another CAG Christian from Sichuan Province attended a meeting at the Church of Almighty God during her trip to Japan. Although she stayed there for only 2 weeks, she was arrested six months after returning to China, where she was later given a sentence of seven years in jail.
As early as July 2015, the CCP issued a document clearly proposing to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the CAG members who had gone abroad, trying to obtain info of the activities they were engaged in abroad. In 2023, the CCP once again issued a confidential document targeting the CAG, demanding “effective curbing of overseas development.” In recent years, the CCP has continuously attempted to extradite CAG Christians who have fled overseas. Obviously, even though these Christians have fled overseas, they have never escaped the CCP’s surveillance and persecution.
